No child should die from leukemia. Yet thousands still do each year, despite major advances in treatment. Increasing attention is turning to environmental factors, including indoor air quality. In modern buildings, wood-based panels and the adhesives within them can contribute to formaldehyde exposure—raising questions about the role industry must play in protecting children’s health.


How Serious Is Childhood Leukemia: Global Statistics and Trends
Childhood leukemia remains a leading global health burden, with data from the World Health Organization (WHO) estimating around 400,000 new cancer cases each year among children, where leukemia is the most common type. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) further reports over 275,000 pediatric cancer cases and more than 105,000 deaths annually, with leukemia the leading cause of cancer death in children.
Globally, leukemia accounts for roughly one-third of all childhood cancer cases and deaths, highlighting its disproportionate impact. Recent epidemiological studies estimate a global incidence rate of about 2.9 per 100,000 children, while in high-income countries the rate reaches nearly 4.9 per 100,000, reflecting more advanced detection systems.
Despite progress, the burden extends beyond mortality. WHO and global health studies emphasize that treatment is often prolonged and costly, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where limited access to care leads to treatment interruption or abandonment. Even when treatment is successful, children may face long-term health complications, meaning the impact of leukemia is not only measured in survival rates, but in lifelong consequences for patients and families.
The data is consistent across sources: childhood leukemia is increasingly treatable, but remains unequally managed—and still imposes a significant medical and economic burden worldwide.
How Indoor Air Quality Affects Children’s Health in Modern Homes
Children are more vulnerable to air pollution than adults. While no single environmental exposure can be identified as the cause of childhood leukemia, reducing children’s unnecessary exposure to formaldehyde and other harmful emissions is a practical step toward healthier indoor environments. Research has also shown that temperature, humidity and ventilation can further affect formaldehyde release from wood composites.
The implication is straightforward: the adhesive is not the only factor, but it is one of the most important factors the panel industry can control.
While current scientific evidence does not establish formaldehyde or wood-panel emissions as a proven major cause of childhood leukemia, reducing children’s exposure to potentially harmful indoor pollutants is a meaningful part of prevention. IARC emphasizes that identifying modifiable environmental exposures remains an important goal in the prevention of childhood leukemia.
For the wood panel industry, this makes lower-emission adhesive technology more than a matter of product performance or regulatory compliance. It is an opportunity to reduce unnecessary chemical exposure at the source—starting with the materials that surround children every day.

But where industry can reduce avoidable exposure, we believe it should.
